McDonald’s in Oak Park

January 8, 2011

It’s pretty rare that I actually write things about Oak Park (let me know if you’d like more of that), but I’m really annoyed with a current discussion that’s going on in our neighborhood.  Several months ago some residents were informed that a McDonald’s was planned for our neighborhood (on Stockton Blvd, across the street from the children’s hospital).  I’m far from the expert on this, but here are a few key points that are being made…

  • Residents close to the proposed site are concerned about the additional traffic from a “double drive-thru” and trash that would likely accumulate outside.
  • We have so many fast food places in our neighborhood.  Do we really need another place that offers unhealthy choices?

Oak Park has a less than stellar reputation, but has gotten a lot of good press lately for the work being done to build community around gardening, farmer’s markets, and healthy food choices.  McDonald’s does nothing to improve the sense of community or improve the reputation of Oak Park.  Why do we need it?

People are claiming the addition of jobs would be a huge benefit, but would the amount of money going out in jobs really equal the amount of money being spent by the low-income residents of our neighborhood?  Obviously not, or they wouldn’t be fighting so hard to build it.

You can see a write-up of the last neighborhood association meeting where this was discussed on Sac Press.

Across from the Children’s Hospital? Does no one see the irony in McDonalds and the problems it’s caused their health?

I wished Oak Park had more local options in general, there is definitely a food shortage right around the medical center. But I hardly think that Mcdonalds fixes the problem.

First option was apparently a mini strip with Chipotle & Panera, but they couldn’t get it to pencil on just one acre. That might have been more palatable (in a couple ways).

Aside from the regressive nutritional content of McD’s, the traffic at that intersection resulting from a “double drive through” (whatever the hell *that* is ) will be a mess.

Luckily, the ER is close by.

But not luckily the double drive-through happens to dump out onto 2nd Avenue which is an essential bike route.
