Church commune?

January 9, 2011

A few days ago P and I went to a potluck for the Oak Park Food Collaborative.  I don’t have a ton to say about the potluck itself, but it did take place in one of my favorite buildings in Oak Park.  The First English Lutheran Church is very old and very beautiful and very likely for sale.

The community room is huge and beautiful with stained glass, painting on the beams, and really cool old chandeliers.  It’s attached to a big kitchen with fun kitchen gadgets that haven’t been made in 50 years.

If I had $500K I might consider buying it, despite the fact that it apparently needs a ton of work.

In addition to the huge community room there are really cute classrooms, a rad fireside room with a courtyard surrounded by the neighboring stained glass buildings, the chapel with more stained glass and this crazy mosaic on the wall, a house, and a huge garden plot the size of an entire lot.  It’s pretty fantastic.  Anyone want to start a communal living compound in Oak Park?
